Toilet - Most number of trousers down toilet trips (even
though I was wearing shorts and a stretch of barren land was the best I
could find!) in a one hour period of 4 beating my previous record of 3
in Nepal, may 1995 -
Hair - Roundest my head has ever been following a 'grade half' crop all over in Kathmandu immediately before leaving for Tibet - Longest my beard has ever been - 23 days without a shave. Shower - Longest number of days without a proper shower or bath - 16 days in total (phew!) - Haircut - Longest I've been without a haircut at 8 weeks - a return to the days of the Jackson 5! Smelliest my socks have ever been from leaving Bamda to arriving in Deqin - I could stand them up unsupported thanks to the ingrained sweat and dirt Miscellaneous Firsts - - Chuffs - Most Alpine Chuffs (that's a bird!) viewed at any one time on top of our Snowland Hotel in Nylam - Food - Most number of times I've 'Popped out for a Chinese' in any one month period! - Tea - Most number of topped up cups of tea at any one sitting - approximately 16 in the snowbound Amdo restaurant in Nylam - Statues - Most number of statues of gods / deities I've seen in any one building - 80 rooms each with its own massive and fairly undistinguishable from the next figure, at the Baju temple in Gyantse. Food? - Most uninspiring national dishes ever tasted - yak butter tea and tsampa - Chocolate - Most repetitive chocolate bingeing at the Tashi No.1 restaurant in Lhasa - Games - Most atmospheric 'Hac' (game of Hacky-Sack) in the main square opposite the Potala Palace, Lhasa - Dogs - Most vicious dogs ever seen in eastern Tibet - most of them half choked / garroted themselves on their leashes in an attempt to sink their fangs into a leg or arm - Highest I've ever camped at 4,500m in the middle of another blizzard below the Zogong La - The highest mountain I've ever seen Mount Everest or as the Tibetans call it Qomolongma meaning Goddess Mother of the Earth which stands at an immense 8,848m |
