highly recommended agency |
Our travel in Tibet and China had always been expected to be tough - not
only physically - but also bureaucratically with the authorities. The
journey from Kathmandu to Lhasa is normally well off limits to
foreigners on cycles, and as for the route out East via Bayi,Pome and
Markam - well its barely an option if you want to travel by Landcruiser
- only just a handful of groups make it through each year - and as for
cycling - well - you better be good at praying - because its fairly
unlikely that you're going to manage to sort out permits from the bureau
of foreign affairs, the tourist office, from the military, and the PSB!
Fortunately for our band - Peter Stewart of Himalayan Mountain Bikes put us in touch with one Rene Schrama of Shigatse travels - an unlikely local in Lhasa - originally from Holland - but resident here for the last 5 years and with a wealth of experience both in Tibet, South West China, and Nepal. We knew that things were going well when Rene invited us for a beer on our second night - things didn't look back after that. The office is efficient and the level of experience filled us with confidence from the start - even with the tough order that lays ahead. Team Human Power wishes to extend every thanks to Rene and the team at Shigatse travels - and recommends very highly the agency for travel in Tibet - either by bicycle - (unicycle, pogo stick or yak caravan - I'm, sure they will be able to arrange it for you).
