Nannua
to Kunming

Days 248 - 252

Nannua to Lu Feng - 117km - turns out as a dry day - at last - and we ride concertedly to make our best total for quite some time. Unfortunately we slip into old habits and do not arrive until after dark
but at least we are within striking distance of Kunming.

105km draws us into our first real Chinese metropolis. We feel it from some 50km out and it builds into a real 'Mega City'. The city is ordered and modern - complete with its own orbital road and flyover. However, for all the streaming motorcars and lorries - the bicycle is certainly still king here - in 'The Spring City'. The sun shines on us - and we arvel at this space age city.

The contrast we feel is like nothing before. After so many weeks in the wild and small villages this monster of 3.5 million takes the breath away. Forget any romantic notion that you may have held of China - this is modern, shiny, hamburgers, thick shakes, treelined boulevards city slicking. None of us can really comprehend it - and one things for sure - we can see that China is not a poor country - Kunming and its inhabitants are booming- and on their way to an economy - that when one thinks about the number of people here - will be frightening.

I figure that the population here can eclipse Europe (East and West),  the USA and Canada and still have some to spare - Kuming by Chinese standards is a small city!

We rest here for 3 days - and arrange our Lao visas -  ready for our  further ventures southward.  The highlight of our time here must not go unmentioned though - Paul's Shop in the student quarter    we find a shelf full of the widest range of Kellogs Cereal and Dean gets Peanut butter - Skippy  wow - what a treat for the tastebuds!
